Week 1

So after the first 100 pages I have a couple of questions that I was thinking about while reading:
1) (the most obvious question of all) What do you think finally made Chess call off the wedding? We found out that she was in love with her fiance's (Michael) brother (Nick), but what do you think caused the final straw?
2) Did Michael just slip, or something else?
3) Do you think that all of them going to Tuckernuck is a good idea? What will emerge from their month long vacation together?
4) Do you think that Tate or Chess will get Barrett? Or maybe something else?
5) Of all the characters, which do you like the most so far? Who has the strongest personality? Who do you relate to the most?

What else????

  1. 1) Im not sure what finally caused Chess to call off the wedding... maybe something had happened with Nick, and she had to call off the wedding. Maybe, all Chess did was confess her feelings to Nick, and Nick's reaction wasn't quite what Chess expected and she felt that she would need to just call it off and move on because she wouldn't be able to handle the wedding and marriage with Michael, knowing that she had more feelings for the brother....
    2) I truly think Michael just slipped (but his mind could have been thinking about the situation so that he was focused 100% on what he was doing which could have taken a part in the accident which led him to his death).
    3) Of course, in the end going to Tuckernuck should be a good thing... but I think it is going to have a VERY rocky beginning, I forsee issues with Chess and Tate, and issues stirring between India and Birdie as well. But in the end I think the story will come to a close with all four of them being closer to each other than ever before (hopefully).
    4) I have a strange feeling about India .... but I HOPE Tate gets Barrett... which leads me to number 5...
    5) Tate is my favorite character so far, because I relate to her, I love her strong personality, getting up and being active in her life, being a strong independent woman. However, even though Chess has had a very depressive personality, she is the one who has the strongest personality. Right off the bat the book starts off with Chess calling off the wedding, then quitting her job. Chess annoys me so much (and i understand she has had it rough) but there are three people with her trying to comfort her and be there for her, and Chess is not budging....

So far I am enjoying the book. I look forward to seeing the relationships develop in this second week. I wonder if Birdie is going to be able to continue her relationship with her new man.... I wonder if Chess will come out of her funk... and I wonder if Tate will finally tell Barrett how she feels.... What do you guys think?

  2. 1. I think that Chess found someone else which questioned her relationship with Michael, maybe even Nick was somehow in this picture.
    2. Michael slipped put I somehow feel that he "wanted" to because he was sooo despondent about Chess calling off the wedding. Maybe an accidental suicide that ended up being final. Could Nick somehow have helped him slip, or why couldn't he have helped?
    3. I'm assuming it is going to be helpful for getting closer together but also for each of them to get to know themselves better.
    4. Barrett might be able to get Chess out of her funk but I feel that Tate is going to give Chess a run for her "man".
    5. So far I gotta say I like Tate the best. She seems very independent, knows who she is, and doesn't seem to be emotionally crippled by her life or by a guy (good or not). She seems more positive?accomplished about her life so far

  3. 1. I think Chess is insecure in spite of being successful in all she does throughout her life. Everything seems to come easy and when she agrees to marry Michael it's what's expected. However, she falls in love with his brother, Nick and he doesn't return that love. She falls apart cause she isn't used to being rejected.
2.I think it was truly an accident but he wasn't thinking clearly and didn't use the safety precaustions he should have.
3.I think it will be helpful since there are no distractions out there, they can get to the nitty gritty of their feelings.
4.I'm hoping Tate gets her man, but a lot of that will depend on Barrett.
5.I like Birdie cause she tries to fix everything.

  4. Aunt Joyce... I totally can see how you think Birdie is your favorite!!! Trying to fix everything, it something that I think you portray in your life. You both seem to think that it will be a good thing to get away from it all and try and deal with their situations (and honestly if it doesn't work, then there is no point to the book). I definately think we are up for a few twists and turns...

  5. before they fix everything.... I think it is going to be a DRAMA fest!

  6. I agree! Already seeing some new twists! That Barrett went on a road trip and Chess treated him so badly. What is it with her???

  7. Well, what do we think is going to happen with Nick and Chess? I think he's definitely not the settle down because I love you type. And...why wasn't he there with his brother, he should have known that Michael wasn't in a good place in his head? I think that Tate will eventually get Chess in on what happened but I'm not sure that Birdie will get the chance to know anything right away. And, what about Hank? Will he wait for Birdie while the sisters, and sisters, and aunt and mother connect? I think his wife/Caroline will die and this will change things for Birdie and Hank...I'm not sure it will be in her favor though (death of a loved one, no matter how the death occurs, is life changing). What about this Lulah character that India knows? I think the "affection" will be somewhat "stalk like" on Lulah's side.

  8. Ironically, some of this reminds me of Aunt Joyce, me, you and Christina. Just because Aunt Joyce and I do so much together and have done so with the two of you. We'll see what the rest of the book reveals as far as personalities go. It's a great book. Drama, adventure, love, interrelationships, looking for something in life. Good choice so far Jen.

  9. Hey Jen,
I am really enjoying the book you picked. I'm anxiously waiting the next set of questions so I can continue on in the book. I've asked a couple of people to join and Harmony said she would join in on the next book. She just started her new set of classes so is busy getting settled in. Also, asked another friend of mine so we'll see.
