Week 2

So here, are some of the things that I have thought about over the last week on what has gone on on the Island!

1. OMG!!!! A lot has happened in the past week. Tate finally gets her night with Barrett. Interestingly enough, it seemed that Barrett had been waiting for the chance to be with Tate with the way he was acting. It seemed kind of strange to me, seeing as he asked Chess first. I wonder if anything is going to happen more so with Tate and Barrett, and what the real relationship between Barrett and Mrs. Fullin...... and if Barrett truly does have feelings for Tate, or if she was just sloppy seconds to Chess.

2. Chess seems like she is opening up little by little, at least within her journal. And there was the night where she was almost going to tell Tate, but Tate fell fast asleep. I wonder after India tells Chess her story, that Chess will feel comfortable sharing what she feels ready to share with India.

3. I also find it interesting that Birdie keeps calling Hank, and when Hank doesn't give her what she needs, she falls back and calls her ex. I think that Birdie just wants somebody to care about her or to take care of her. And she keeps getting let down by Hank, but Bill, ironically, keeps stepping up to the plate and answering her calls, and actually is interested, or at least seems interested. I wonder, in the end, is it going to be Bill or Hank that steals Birdie's heart.

4. India's story is a surprising one, for us as the readers, and for India herself. I think this break is good for her so that she can evaluate what is going on in her life... is it just a thing of mixed emotions, or does she actually have feelings for Lula?

5.As we dive more into the story we are slowly getting to more and more of the story between Chess, Michael, and Nick. I wonder if in the end, Chess ends up with Nick, even through all of this...

What do you guys think???

  1. Agreed!, It's getting more involved and things keep coming out in the open. To your #1, I was so glad to see Tate getting to go out with Barrett and that she was a knockout and Barrett seems genuinely interested. I'm thinking Mrs. Fullin is not part of the equation. She's just an annoyance for Barrett and making herself look pretty pathetic. She's the cougar. I'm still hoping that maybe, things will work out the way Tate wants it to.#2. I'm glad that Chess is using the journal cause it is helpful to write things down and get it out. Kind of cathartic. I was hoping she could get to talk with Tate but sadly, Tate fell asleep cause she is definitely more active. (kind of like a Jennifer :),. It's good that India is talking to Chess. #3 - Birdie is definitely "in love" with Hank. However, in fairness to Hank, she told him she couldn't reach him and that for a month, he would be on his own. So he's keeping busy with his family, as he should. I can see or understand Birdie's frustration as she was excited to find a way to reach him. It's nice that Bill is reachable and he seems to be quite agreeable and patient with Birdie. I think he still loves her and was just so busy with providing for the family that his time wasn't given to Birdie personally. When he had time to relax, he went golfing. (kind of like what your dad does with his softball playing). Birdie went along until she decided she needs time, too. Will be curious to how this plays out with Hank, Bill. #4 As to India, that was quite revealing. I think she did the right thing by putting Lula off, but wonder how it will play out with the note Lula send India. I really don't think India needs that complication. #5. I was glad to read more of the Chess, Nick, Michael thing. Michael is a nice guy but not what Chess wanted. She went along with him cause it was the "right thing to do". However, her being in love with Nick is sad, too. Nick is trying to do the right thing by honoring his brother's "love" and staying away from Chess. But then, he can't help himself and does see her and withdraws again. That's honorable. Chess is caught between a rock and a hard place. She feels guilty for breaking off the engagement, the resulting death of Michael, the love she feels for Nick. The first time in her life where things don't happen as smoothly as all her life had been. So her world has been blown. No wonder she is emotionally crippled. I do want her to tell Tate that Barrett was going to ask Tate out first and not Chess as Tate thinks. Can't wait to read the next installment. Great choice of books, Jen. Ironically, I agree with your mom that this could be us and you and your sister. Tee hee.

  2. This truly is a great book to keep reading on. I"m hoping that Barrett only asked Chess firt because I think that Birdie kind of set him up to it. Seems like Mrs. Fullin has something on Barrett - she definitely has her sights set on him, is good looking, has money and seems to get what she wants and is that Barrett as well. Because of her sister's "pressure" I do feel that India will open up to Chess but not sure Chess will respond in return...not yet. My guess is that she hopes Tate will read her journal and that might start the conversation for Chess. Birdie seems a bit "desperate" as far as Hank is concerned. She had already told him before embarking on this island adventure that she wouldn't be able to be in contact with him for a month. Hank might be a bit put off because she is calling way too much - makes her seem like a needy person. I feel it's a bit unfair for her to drag her ex into her drama with Hank. I actually don't think Nick is being honorable as far as his brother was concerned. If he had been, then he should not contact Chess whatsoever but he always does, this puts so much interest with Chess. He needed to step up to the place and tell her that in spite of his feelings his brother loves him and the two of them together would have a better life then what he (Nick) could provide Chess. Even if they get together at the end, I think the novelty of Nick's bohemian life, would wear off and Chess would realize that she wants more stability, comfort, social life in the "upper or upper-middle class" which is what Michael would have given her. The excitement of Nick's position, being in the band, traveling always seems romantic to people at first, but gets tiring when there is not stable "home" to live in. I don't know for sure where India is at. Curious about strong feelings with Lulah - the type that is unconventional for her, actual interest with true feelings for Lulah as a possible life partner. This one is surprising to me.
