October Book
Here is the book for the month of October. The Girl Who Played With Fire. The second book in the "The Girl...." trilogy. Week 1: Read through page 158 Week 2: Read through page 305 Week 3: Read through page 448 Week 4: Finish!!!!!
I loved the book. Turned out to be a very interesting read. I agree with you about the Vanger family. All those other girls getting murdered because of skeletons in a family's closet. Geez! But Harriet also deserves to leave that part of her life alone. It will be up to her to expose her brother and dad. I wasn't surprised that it was her who pushed her dad in the water and held him down. Wished she had the opportunity to do that earlier.
Salander is emotionally fragile but in defense of Blomkvist, he didn't know she felt that strongly. Salander was so good at hiding her feelings. Believe it or not, a lot of marriages are like Berger's. Not my style but it does exist. So I did feel so badly for Salander when she was about to tell Blomkvist she loved him and saw him with Berger. I would have done the same as she did. We'll see if anything comes out of this in the next book.
I loved the fact that Blomkvist and Salander brought down Wernerstrom and his shady dealings. So there was vindication for Blomkvist in that.
I didn't care for Martin killing himself in a car crash. I know he didn't want to face what he did in public but that is exactly why I wanted him to be alive and let the whole world know what a creep he was. As usual, Salander compensated the other girls' families. If it wasn't for her, nobody would have thought to do that. Shows you that there is more to her than we know. The saying "Still Water Runs Deep" applies to her.
Sure do love her character. She is resilient and a survivor with a heart.
Can't wait to dive in the next book. I'm expecting more revelations on our characters here.
I'm glad that I am in your book discussion club. It's a blast and wish I could get more people involved. My close friends aren't the readers that I am but I'm still working on it.
Oh, as an aside,.... I wasn't sure about Harriet. Some of the other girls weren't found either and that's why Martin was able to get away with what he did for so long. I'm glad that Harriet had such a good friend in Anita who helped out. So the quandary is - should Anita have spoken out, or Harriet try again to talk with Vanger? Or was Harriet too emotionally fragile at that time(cause she was so young and been betrayed by her father and brother)that disappearing was the only way out. So it was Harriet that send the yearly flower to her uncle. I kind of thought it might have been the "murderer" or "kidnapper" taunting him. Someone could have been jealous of his devotion to her.
It's good to get your perspective on that cause I am always willing to give one the benefit of why they took the action they did. (So I am kind of like Anita, Harriet and Blomkvist. We twifle too much.)I find your take refreshing cause with you, it's either right or wrong. (like Salander) Would love to know your mom's take on this.
I really am sorry I didn't keep up with your pace on this book. It was finished and I loved it. The new book is supposed to start out quicker and I'll be buying it tomorrow after school and start power reading the first 158 pages so I can join in with the book club. You are quite the woman, guess I'm getting older and no excuses other than that. See you soon. I'll ask others around to see if they haven't read this book and can join us.
